Don’t Just Be a “Member of…”

4 Nov

All too often, students or recent grads visit the Career Center with a resume that reads: “Member of XYZ Organization.”  Well, anyone can be a member!  Set yourself apart in employers’ eyes and become a leader.  You don’t have to be the President, Vice President, or Treasurer to be a leader.  Volunteer to organize the next community service event, help run the membership drive, or step up to improve the communication of the chapter.

This type of involvement demonstrates to employers:  follow-up and follow through, planning skills, adaptability and flexibility, implementation of a project, organizational ability, and marketing know-how.  These are all attributes of leadership that can be communicated on a resume (and an interview) and transferred to a potential employer’s organization.
