Put The GPA On The Resume
24 MarMore employers are screening candidates for GPA than at any other time over the past five years. Currently, nearly three out of four say they screen for GPA. It is very helpful for students to list their GPA on the resume, even if it is below average. At some point, most employers will ask the student anyway for their grades, so it’s best to just go ahead and include it. However, a high GPA is just one component employers consider in their candidates. And if two candidates are equally qualified, what helps employers choose between them? A student’s leadership experience has a slight edge over all other factors.
The top factors are as follows:
- Has held leadership position
- Major
- Has been involved in extracurricular activities
- School attended
- Has done volunteer work

Researching Employers
21 MarEmployers have indicated ‘…the biggest interview “no-no” is a lack of knowledge about the company.’ One of the most important tasks in any job search is to learn as much as possible about industry information and the organizations within those industries.
Attending a career expo or going into an interview with knowledge of the company conveys a sincere interest to the employer. The gathered information will also help during decision-making process.
Some of the details the research might include:
- History of the organization
- Organizational culture
- Products and services
- Earnings and market share
- Competitors
- Late-breaking news

Post-Career Expo Follow-up Strategy
14 MarDid you attend the Spring Expo last week? If so, your work is not done!
If you obtained business cards or contact information from the recruiters or hiring managers, be sure to send a thank you email (or handwritten note if possible). Keep it brief, but reiterate how nice it was to meet them and express your interest in the company.
You may have heard “go apply online,” so make sure that you do! Recruiters do check their online systems to make sure that you followed through with their instructions. Not only does it keep the company in legal compliance, having you “apply online” allows your profile to become search-able to many recruiters and hiring managers across the country. You don’t want to be left out!
